Still doing the thing
Goodness has it really been more than 2 months?
Apologies for not updating for so long. I actually meant to post something a couple weeks ago but got caught up in trap of wanting to make a big dramatic blog update that it kept getting delayed. So I decided to skip the fireworks, bells, and whistles and just get to the point of what's been going on ( What you are reading right now is my 6th attempt at making a post).
Since my last update, I did a lot of studying on different parts of game design. Stuff like narrative (of course), level, UX, and gameplay. With what I learned (and still learning), I went back to redrafting (once again :/) my story outline to make it better complement the game designy part of it. This took me a while because I had to determine what I would be capable of making (gameplay mechanics, mini games, puzzles, QTE's, etc.) on my own.
All this studying also made me realize how inefficient I've been with my developing. Trying to put together entire scenes (like the layout of the town) for a significant period of time only to eventually cut it out entirely was no uncommon for me. So to avoid that, I did the not so fun part of game development, putting together my roadmap of what needs to be completed before moving on to the next step. What helped me make this roadmap were these two videos:
The gist of these videos is that before doing anything else, make sure the core concept of your game is something people would actually want to play. In order to do that, you need to have a prototype phase This means putting together a kind of bare bones proof of concept version of the game. By bare bones, I mean very empty, grey scenes of only the necessary actors in it with almost no animation or VFX. After having people playtest and give me feedback, it'll be easier for me to make changes since I haven't spent unnecessary time prettying everything around it up. It's a kind of build, destroy, rebuild kind of phase in order to strengthen the foundation of my game before adding all the super fancy visual stuff in it.Although I don't have any pictures or clips to show on what I've been working on (unless you'd like a picture of me studying), I want to assure everyone that I'm still here and working on Wayfinders whenever I have the chance.
